What Makes Maple Sugar Certified Organic?
All Bascom Maple Farms organic maple sugar is certified by the Quality Assurance International (QAI) and carries the USDA organic seal. This ensures that when you choose our organic maple sugar, it will be free of any pesticides and chemicals.
So what makes maple sugar certified organic?
The QAI Inspection Process
Our certified organic maple has been put through an inspection process that covers the entire “lifespan” of the maple from tree to grove to spout to sugarhouse.
Beginning with a walk through our sugarbush, inspectors evaluate our forest management practices (including thinning and harvesting) and observe our tapping procedures to make sure we’re getting just the right number of taps on a tree, so our trees are not harmed.
The inspectors then confirm that no chemical fertilizers are used on or near our farms. They’ll even inspect what our neighbors and town are doing to make sure no chemicals they use could drift into our sugarbush.
From the spout, inspectors follow the path of the sap through our tubes to the sugar house and the boiling process where equipment must meet rigid cleaning standards. Certification confirms that paraformaldehyde is not used and defoaming agents are organic.
