Maple Syrup: MapleSource 2010 Season Update by Bascom Family Farms
Following a banner crop like 2009, the 2010 crop had a tough act to follow! Once everything was sugared off though, Mother Nature cooperated and at Bascom Family Farms we had a normal production year.
This was not the case for the Southern producing regions, however, with Southern New England, southern New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio experiencing considerably below average production. Some farmers were 80 - 90% below with the primary reason being uncooperative weather; they just didn’t get the freezing nights followed by warm days. That being said, this region is a small piece of the total industry’s production. The remaining producing areas did much better with average to slightly above average production.
While all official reports haven’t been released yet, the estimates are that Quebec produced 90 million lbs, the rest of Canada an additional 6,000,000, and the United States 15,000,000 lbs (Vermont producing about one-third of that). Together with our reserve from the abundant 2009 year, the industry has 127,000,000 lbs of maple available to meet the worldwide demand.
